L.O. Learners analyse one of the talk and music radio programmes broadcast by the radio station they have explored.

a & b) Running Order and DJs/Presenters

Sweepers are used in transition between different segments of the show (i.e. news, music, presenter talking etc) to help keep the flow of the show and also to tell a new listener what radio channel they are listening to if they have just tuned in.

When talking about a specific event or issue, a clip of someone speaking about/at it is usually played to further elaborate on it and add context.

c) Content

The majority of the show is taken up by the news and the presenter making small talk and telling stories/talking about events. This tells me that the main purpose of the show is to inform its audience. The presenter is very bubbly and friendly which is extremely important in appealing to the audience as you do not want to make the listeners feel as though they aren't included or welcomed as that would deter them from listening.

The music used is very upbeat which is what the audience needs in the morning to help them to wake up or stay awake.

The tagline for the sweepers is 'A passion for Cambridgeshire.' This directly informs the audience what the station stands for and so helps to appeal to the target audience who are also interested and have a 'passion' for staying informed about Cambridgeshire.

The Weather and Traffic segments fall under the same appeal as the news - they inform the audience but about more specific topics.

d) Target Audience

The target audience is middle age and elderly men and women who want to be informed about the current events and issues within their local area and how that will affect them and their friends/family. BBC Radio Cambridgeshire adheres to this by broadcasting news segments/shows such as The Dotty McLeod Breakfast show and Thordis at Drivetime which keep them informed about what is going on in their community. These presenters have a very friendly style of presenting that helps the target audience to feel welcome and so more likely to continue to listen to the show.

Comments

  1. Add to target audience. How does the presenter style appeal to the audience? What pleasure do the audience get from listening to a show about their community?
