L.O. Learners record and edit a competent 5-minute extract from the planned talk and music radio programme.

a) Setting Up Appropriate Equipment

Above is the sound desk (Numark Mix Track Pro) and a MacBook with the mixing software and Mac computer.

The sound desk contains two decks with controls for both as well as for the microphone and headphones, apart from the headphones attached to the MacBook which are used by the person handling the mixing software. All of the cables were moved behind the equipment so as to reduce the risk of someone tripping ovr them.

The microphone is attached to the MacBook and has a Pop Filter so as to make the voice input sound clearer and lesson the background noise. The microphone is turned towards the presenter and anyone else who is speaking.

The software we used to record the show was Mixxx. I uploaded all of the tracks/jingles/sweepers need into a crate within the software so that everything was stored in one place to make it easily accessible. To play a track, I simply dragged it into one of the two decks and hit the play button. I could then upload the next track needed on the second deck and play it right as the first track ended or when was necessary within the show. The track 'Connor Jingle' is within the first deck and 'Breakfast Jingle' is in the second.

b) Following Running Order and Content Plan

When recording the show, the running order was on a second monitor in front of us so that we could correctly follow it and make sure we knew when to transition into the next segment. In the final recording, however, we had a minute of time left and so we decided to play a song from the playlist we had created for the treatment.

The actual content of the show is slightly different from the initial proposal in regards to the news and the music talk segment with Connor and Ben. Originally, the three news pieces were about crime rates rising in an area near Cambridge, child obesity rates rising, and Jeremy Corbyn pledging for free bus fares. However, at the last minute, we changed those stories to The 1975 announcing a new album, Love Island returning for a fourth season, and the winner of Britain's Got Talent in order to make them more relevant and relatable to our audience.

Furthermore, the music segment with Connor and Ben was originally just them discussing Drake, Reading Festival, and other relevant artists, however, we managed to acquire an interview from the Assistant Music Producer at The Cambridge Junction and so the content in that segment was replaced by the interview as we felt it would be more appropriate due to Callum's credibility.

The running order was followed exactly, in terms of segment order, however, the actual timings of each segment were not the same but shorter. Although, we easily fixed this by playing a song.

c) Following Safe Working Practices

To help keep us safe when working, we followed the BBC Safety Guidelines for the tasks we were completing.

Some control measures we put in place were:

  • Making sure the area is void of any trip, slip, or fall hazards and that all electrical equipment is not at risk of any faults.
  • The equipment is set up correctly and tested by a member of the IT staff.
  • All members of the team are made aware of the 'local safety, first aid, and evacuation arrangements.'
  • Any guests were also made aware of these arrangements as well as escorted around the campus.

d) Following Production Processes

My role was Assistant Producer of the Content sections within the show. This meant that I oversaw the radio package.

Pre-Production

During Pre-Production, it was my responsibility to research different packages for radio stations and find a style that would best fit with our own station. I also created visuals for the show such as the logo. For the treatment, I made samples for sweepers/jingles to give an idea of what they would sound like and what mood they would create. Moreover, I had to download all relevant clips such as music and vox pops that would be played and edit them, in preparation for the show.

I also had to create the majority of the jingles and sweepers that were not already made during the treatment process. Lastly, I was responsible for editing the interview with Callum Sayer recorded by Connor and Ben so that it fit within the time given in the running order.

The tasks I carried out were quite typical of what an actual Assistant Producer would do, according to the BBC website, save for a few that were completed by other members in the team so that responsibilities were evenly shared as we are not the size of a typical radio team.

What the BBC website says:

Production

For the actual production of the show, I was responsible for presenting the package which involved operating the software Mixxx, uploading all of the files needed into the program, and playing them according to the running order and presenter.

This differs from what a typical Assistant Producer would do as normally the Producer would present the package, however, due to my having more knowledge within our team of using the software, I presented the package instead.

What the BBC website says:

Post-Production

I edited the final version of the radio show extract and uploaded it to YouTube. This is not something that an Assistant Producer would do as the show would actually be broadcast, however, we could not do that for ours and so had to just record it instead.
